San Francisco City Hall
There’s something undeniably timeless about getting married at San Francisco City Hall. With its grand architecture, sweeping staircase, soft natural light, and iconic interiors, it offers an elegant setting for everything from an intimate civil ceremony to a larger wedding celebration.
Planning a San Francisco City Hall Wedding
San Francisco City Hall is one of the most iconic places to get married in the Bay Area, whether you're planning an intimate civil ceremony or a larger celebration with family and friends. While the process can feel simple compared to planning a traditional wedding, there are still a few important details to consider, from choosing the right ceremony option to deciding how much time you’d like for portraits throughout the building. One of my favorite things about City Hall weddings is how much flexibility they offer. You can keep the day intimate and effortless, or turn your ceremony into the beginning of a full wedding celebration elsewhere in San Francisco.
Choosing Your Ceremony

There are different ways to get married at San Francisco City Hall depending on the experience you’re envisioning. Some couples choose a simple civil ceremony, while others reserve one of City Hall’s beautiful spaces for a more private celebration with their guests.
The best option really depends on your guest count, how much privacy you’d like, and the overall feeling you want for the day. If photography is an important part of your experience, I also recommend leaving enough time before or after the ceremony to explore City Hall together rather than trying to fit portraits into a very small window.
The Best Time for Photos at San Francisco City Hall
City Hall can become quite busy, particularly around the most recognizable locations inside the building. For couples who want photographs that feel more intimate and editorial, timing can make a significant difference. Earlier in the day generally gives us more freedom to work throughout the building, while weekdays tend to offer a different experience than busier dates and events. Even when City Hall is active, though, there are so many beautiful corners, hallways, windows, and architectural details that we can use to create photographs that still feel intentional and personal.

My Favorite Places to Photograph Inside City Hall

4TH FLOOR BALCONY
One of City Hall’s most beautiful portrait locations, with grand architecture, soft light, and a quieter atmosphere overlooking the building’s interior.
THE WINDOWS
The oversized windows throughout City Hall create beautiful soft light and a simple, romantic backdrop for more intimate portraits.
THE GRAND STAIRCASE
The heart of San Francisco City Hall and its most iconic setting perfect for timeless portraits that showcase the scale and elegance of the architecture.
CITY HALL EXTERIOR
The celebration continues outside, where the grand façade creates the perfect backdrop for joyful exits, group photographs, and that unmistakable San Francisco City Hall feeling.

Where to Go After Your City Hall Ceremony

Your wedding doesn’t have to end when you walk out of City Hall. Some couples continue their portraits around San Francisco, celebrate over an intimate dinner, or meet family and friends for a reception elsewhere in the city.
This is also a beautiful opportunity to bring another side of San Francisco into your photographs. Depending on your vision, we can incorporate city streets, classic architecture, the coastline, or another location that feels meaningful to the two of you.
Photographing Your San Francisco City Hall Wedding
City Hall weddings move differently from traditional wedding days. There can be crowds, multiple ceremonies happening nearby, changing light, and very limited windows in certain locations. Knowing how to work within that environment allows us to spend less time worrying about logistics and more time creating photographs that feel effortless.
My approach blends documentary storytelling with intentional, editorial portraiture. I’ll photograph the moments happening naturally around you while also giving you direction when needed, creating a gallery that feels both beautifully composed and true to how the day actually felt.

Whether you’re envisioning a quiet civil ceremony for two, an intimate celebration with your closest people, or City Hall as the beginning of a larger wedding day, I’d love to document it in a way that feels timeless, personal, and distinctly yours.
